Tess was reading a book when I came into the room to kiss her goodnight. “Five more minutes, Tess,” I said. “Do you want to snuggle, or would you rather keep reading?”
Tess promptly put her book down and made room on the bed for me. She snuggled into me, and I ruffled her hair.
I was just about to ask about the highlights of her day – our routine – when she said: “Mummy, do you know why I chose snuggles over reading?”
“Why?” I asked.
“Because there will always be books,” she replied, wrapping her arms around me. “But I won’t always have you.”
Such an unutterably sweet sentiment, which immediately launched me into a mid-life crisis.
